A thigh lift usually involves the removal of a large portion of excess skin from the inside of the thigh. Loose skin around the thighs is usually caused by extreme weight loss, genetic predisposition or a loss of skin elasticity as a result of the natural ageing process. The thigh lift treatment is a common procedure in aesthetic and plastic surgery.
The type of incision is based on the amount of excess skin. Generally, a slightly curved incision is made in the groin area that extends into the crotch or inner thigh. Removal of the loose skin and closing the wound naturally smoothens out the skin. Thanks to elaborate preparation techniques and state-of-the-art suture materials, scarring is usually unremarkable.
The surgery takes about 2 hours and is performed under general anaesthesia. Thanks to state-of-the-art anaesthetics, the subsequent wake-up phase is gentle. After the surgery, the patient spends one night at the clinic for observation. Afterwards, patients receive the mobile telephone number of the surgeon to ensure availability around the clock.
Patients must also ensure they follow the aftercare instructions. This includes adhering to a certain recovery period in order to let the wounds heal and to avoid affecting the results. Showers can be resumed on the 2nd day after the surgery. Sport and strenuous activities should be avoided for 4 to 6 weeks. During this time, the patient wears a special compression garment that adjusts the skin to the shape of the body. The first check-up is after one week, and the final check-up is after 12 weeks.
Every operation, including a thigh lift, involves certain risks. Normally the procedure is extremely low-risk when performed by an experienced plastic surgeon. However, complications such as bleeding or poorly healing scars can occur in rare cases. This is why it is important for the patient to follow the surgeon’s instructions and to adhere to the recovery period. Doing so considerably lowers the risk.
