Facelift

There are many skin rejuvenation methods and wrinkle treatments, from externally applied anti-ageing preparations to minimally invasive injections. The most effective long-term solution for achieving smooth facial features and removing sagging skin is the traditional facelift. At our clinic in Oberkassel, we only use the latest techniques to achieve natural results for a more youthful appearance.

How does a traditional facelift work?

The aim of a facelift is to restore the natural contours in the cheeks, chin and neck, giving the skin a smooth, fresh and youthful appearance. This enables us to positively influence the changes to the skin elasticity and to the soft tissue attachment in the head and neck area that occur over time as a result of genetic and external influences.
Long-lasting and natural-looking results are the benchmark of a modern facelift.

What methods do we use for facelifts at the Klinik am Rhein?

In order to return the skin on the cheeks and neck to its original position, it is not enough to simply lift the skin; it is also necessary to reposition the so-called SMAS layer (= superficial muscular aponeurotic system). This fibrous membrane can be moved during the facelift and attached at a higher position.

By doing so, we can return the soft tissue of the face to its original position without placing the skin under greater than normal tension. The resulting excess skin is removed; however, there is no tension on the edges of the skin and consequently no mask-like appearance. Then the incisions are closed using fine sutures.

What aftercare is required for a facelift?

The procedure takes 2 to 3 hours and is usually performed under twilight anaesthesia under the observation of an anaesthetist. Afterwards, patients spend one night at our clinic for observation. For the rare case that complications occur, patients are given an emergency mobile number where they can reach their plastic surgeon at any time.

The fine sutures in front of the ear are removed after a week, and the remaining sutures behind the ear after 2 weeks. Patients are usually able to socialise again after 10–14 days.

What risks are associated with the surgery?

As with any surgery, patients may experience side effects after a facelift. However, when the procedure is performed by an experienced surgeon, the risk of bleeding, infection or delayed healing is very low. Scars also usually heal very well and are concealed due to the placement of the incisions.
