A breast lift is a procedure to lift sagging breast tissue. The aim of this two-hour procedure is to lift and shape sagging breasts in line with the patient’s wishes. A breast lift is always part of a breast reduction procedure. If the patient has also lost volume as a result of weight loss or pregnancy, the breast lift is often combined with breast implants.
A mastopexy, the medical term for the procedure, is suitable for women with very deflated breasts. Sagging breast tissue is a sign of the natural ageing process, during which the connective tissue gradually loses its elasticity. It can also occur after pregnancy or after losing a large amount of weight. At the Klinik am Rhein, we perform a routine operation to remove the excess skin and permanently lift the breasts.
We specialise in a procedure that not only reduces the skin and the breast tissue, but also supports the gland. This is referred to as the ‘internal bra’ technique and is used in breast lifts as well as breast reduction surgery.
By specifically relocating the gland and attaching it to the muscle, the surgeon can create the ideal shape and, in most cases, achieve a result with minimal scarring. Dissolvable sutures are used to close the wound, which improves healing thanks to a new kind of barbed suture.
The breast lift takes around 2 hours, during which the patient is put under general anaesthesia by one of our experienced anaesthetists. Thanks to state-of-the-art anaesthetics, the subsequent wake-up phase is gentle. After the surgery, the patient spends one night at the clinic for observation. During the first few days of recovery at home, the surgeon can be contacted at any time at an emergency number.
Treatments such as breast lifts are some of the most common procedures in aesthetic and plastic surgery. When performed by an experienced specialist, the procedure is very low-risk. However, we cannot completely exclude the risks for complications. In rare cases, bleeding or wound healing disorders occur. However, the wounds usually heal without any side effects. Temporary bruising and swelling during the first few days heal quickly.
Health insurance providers usually do not cover the cost for this procedure, even though there are often medical reasons for the treatment, including physical discomfort (inflammation under the breast) or profound emotional distress.
