Vaginoplasty is a procedure that women request particularly after giving birth. After women give birth, the vagina and the surrounding muscles and mucous membranes expand and do not always fully return to their original form. This can be distressing for the affected women.
During vaginoplasty, the surgeon removes a strip of the mucous membrane in the front part of the vagina and tightens and sutures together the surrounding muscles. This is normally performed under general anaesthesia. The opened mucous membrane is put back together and a vaginal pack soaked in ointment is inserted.
Since there are important structures around the vagina, this procedure should be performed by an experienced specialist for plastic surgery. There are usually no alternatives to surgical vaginoplasty, since the affected women have usually already tried pelvic floor exercises to resolve the problem.
In rare cases, women can suffer from a loose vagina without having given birth. The cause is not always clear. This procedure usually makes women feel more confident and like a weight has been lifted off their shoulders.
